Wood is a beautiful natural material. Being such it has all the characteristics of a living material and can be prone to expansion and contractions dependant on the temperature and relative humidity. Expensive hardwoods are more stable as are engineered timbers where the profiles are made up of cross laminated strips adding strength and rigidity. But whatever timber product you choose it has to be remembered that wood needs caring for and as a result will need treating with oils or an exterior coating every 18mth to 2 years. Again due to the inherent expansion and contraction characteristics in wood we would usually only recommend a size limitation of up to 4 metres.
